Dear John Letter To Canned Vegetables

Dear Canned Vegetables,

I’m so sorry to do this to you, but I really don’t think we should be seeing each other anymore. Our relationship has become so unhealthy.

We have had so many wonderful years together. You were always there for me when I needed a hot, quick meal to warm me up on a cold day. And, you didn’t ask for much when I was short on cash. Oh, and you are always such a sharp dresser with your colorful, beautiful labels; who could resist you? But, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. I know you’ve tried to change by reducing your sodium and going organic, but it’s just not enough for me. I don’t want to change who you are; you need to be comfortable in your own label.

I hate to hurt you, but I must be honest and let you know that I have found a new love – fresh vegetables. The ear of corn I met last weekend was playing hard to get, but after peeling back the husk and allowing my fingers to run through its long, silky hair, I knew it was worth the time. I am currently seeing peas now and with each bright green, firm orb that emerges from the pod, I just cannot see myself anymore with your soft, limp version.

I hope that we can still be friends. In fact, my family would love to have you over for the holidays. Your green beans are always welcome at Thanksgiving – and please bring your cousin, cream of mushroom soup!

I know this is difficult, but I want you to know that it’s not you, it’s me. I just need a fresh start.

Lots of love,

Julianna
